Easy Homemade Fries
My husband and I used to buy those frozen tater tots and throw them in the over or air fryer. I know, I know…why? Well they are delicious! But I also realized the ingredient list isn’t the greatest…and they weren’t making me feel real great after eating them. That’s when I realized why am I not just making my own fries? Please don’t buy into that whole, “potatoes are evil” myth. They aren’t. Potatoes are your friend, and they shouldn’t be feared. I mean you probably shouldn’t be eating 50 of them a day, but everything in moderation, right?
I’m not going to go into a full on recipe here because there’s a million different ways to make them (or at least a few). So here’s the rundown:
Pick your potato. I like gold potatoes. You can get a bag of small ones or if you prefer the classic fry shape, go for the large. Sweet potatoes are also great. Wash your potatoes thoroughly and chop them or slice them. I prefer to make them on the smaller side so they cook quicker. If you have a larger air fryer or plan to bake them in the oven, you can certainly make them into wedges.
I then like to soak the potatoes in water for a couple of hours, but it’s not the end of the world if you forget this step.
Then I throw them on a towel to dry them. You can either put the slices in a bowl to season them, or do it directly in the air fryer or pan. I hate washing up too many dishes, so I usually opt for the latter option.
Lightly coat the potatoes in avocado oil, toss them. Then add your seasonings. I like garlic salt, black pepper, paprika, and cumin, but feel free to mix it up. Don’t overdo the oil or seasonings though, because that’s easy to do.
If you’re cooking them in an oven, I recommend 400 degrees and 20-40 minutes depending on the thickness of the slices. Just keep checking on them, and stir them around as they cook.
If you’re cooking them in an air fryer, I typically set mine to 400 degrees for 20-30 minutes. You will want to shake/toss them about every 5-8 minutes.
Serve them with your favorite dip and enjoy!
